The individual texts are selected from the seminal workĀ Sagen des klassischen AltertumsĀ (Gods and Heroes: Myths and Epics of Ancient Greece) byĀ Gustav SchwabĀ (1792ā1850), and strikingly illustrated by 29 artists, among them outstanding representatives of the Golden Age of Book Illustration and the Arts and Crafts Movement, includingĀ Walter CraneĀ (1845ā1915),Ā Arthur RackhamĀ (1867ā1939),Ā William Russell FlintĀ (1880ā1969), andĀ Virginia Frances SterrettĀ (1900ā1930).
These illustrations are complemented by scene-setting vignettes for each story and a genealogical tree of Greek gods and goddesses byĀ Clifford Harper, commissioned especially for this volume. Placing the tales in context, the book contains a historical introduction by Dr. Michael Siebler and is rounded off withĀ biographies of all featured artistsĀ as well as anĀ extensive glossaryĀ of ancient Greeceās most famous protagonists.
